NFU launches integrated water management strategy

January 27, 2021  By Bree Rody

The U.K.-based National Farmers Union (NFU) has officially launched its new water management strategy.

The purpose of the strategy is to empower farmers and growers to play a central role in better land management to improve water quality, and better water management to tackle the dual challenges of floods and droughts. It also calls on other sectors including water companies for their cooperation and involvement.

“The pressures faced by farmers and growers in managing ‘too much’ and ‘not enough’ water are likely to become so great that they will not always be solved at the farm level,” NFU deputy president Stuart Roberts wrote in his report introduction. “Cooperation and collaboration within the farming community, and with other sectors such as water companies, will be vital in our response to managing extremes and in improving the quality of our water.”

Among its core tenants of beliefs is that an aftercare program for soils and field drainage should be planned, funded and implemented. | READ MORE
