Nutrient runoff increases despite conservation efforts in Iowa

A recent study from the University of Iowa shows the pace of nutrient runoff has increased since 1999 and continues to be a large portion of the total runoff to the Gulf of Mexico. 

More than 80 per cent of nutrient runoff in Iowa comes from agricultural sources. For the past five years, Iowa has been running a voluntary nutrient reduction strategy, but this recent study shows no improvement in the overall situation. 

State and agriculture leaders in Iowa have maintained the voluntary reduction strategy is a long-term effort to reverse what is largely legacy nutrients from decades of over-application. Public and private funding for conservation programs have increased, according to the state’s latest annual strategy progress report. | READ MORE
