The first annual North American Drainage Conference will take place virtually on March 5.
For $20 USD, contractors, landowners and all those interested in drainage and water management can tune in for half a day of engaging educational content focused on tech, tools and the future of drainage.

Matthew Helmers
Session: Impacts of drainage outlet redesign
Dr. Matthew Helmers’s research interests are in the areas of water management and water quality, specifically non-point source pollution, drainage, in-field performance of vegetative filters, and the impact of crop and animal production systems on Iowa’s water resources. Much of his present research focuses on subsurface drainage and the impacts of subsurface drainage on hydrology and water quality in agricultural areas.
Ruijie Zeng
Session: Agricultural drainage detection from multi-source remote sensing
Ruijie Zeng obtained his bachelor’s in hydraulic engineering from Tsinghua University, China, and master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He works on enhancing mechanistic understanding, predictable capability, and sustainable management of watersheds.
Jacob Handsaker
Session: Working with stakeholders on improving water quality through drainage: A contractor’s perspective
Jacob Handsaker is a fifth-generation farmer who diversified his business into drainage in the 2000’s. After learning the craft of drainage and excavation, Handsaker started Hands-On Tiling and Excavating. More than a contractor, Jacob has spent the last 10 years to prioritize water quality in accordance with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. Working in partnership with agencies and initiatives such as the ADMC, the Iowa Agricultural Water Alliance and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Batch and Build program, Handsaker has made a name for himself in Iowa and beyond. He was named one of Drainage Contractor’s 2023 GroundBreakers.
Continuing education credits on soil and water management will be available for every session viewed.
