U.K. farmers’ union calls for water management strategy

October 23, 2023  By Drainage Contractor

With Storm Babet leaving vast areas of farmland underwater, the U.K. National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has released an official statement demanding the U.K. government “matches its talk about the importance of UK food security with action on water management.”

Following what the union described as a “devastatingly wet 2023 harvest” and “the most expensive crop ever grown due to inflation,” NFU deputy president Tom Bradshaw says members are telling stories of struggle and desperation. With more heavy rain forecast to come, a comprehensive water management strategy is being stressed by the Union in order to improve Britain’s farms’ flood resilience.

The NFU unveiled its integrated water management strategy in 2021, calling for urgent action to bring the nation’s water infrastructure up-to-date to better cope with extreme weather events.

“Central to this will be significant investment with ambitious upgrades of ageing rural flood defences, drainage and waterways as well as regular maintenance,” Bradsaw explained in a memo on the union’s website.
