Subirrigation of crops using drainage water recycling

August 12, 2021  By Bree Rody

A recent webinar from the Iowa Learning Farms hosted by Kelly Nelson, professor, division of plant sciences at the University of Missouri Greenley Research Centre focused on applied research in crop production and drainage water recycling. The webinar focused on how the two can work together.

The practice of applying water back into fields through subsurface drainage, according to studies, helped raise and manage the soil water within crop rooting zones, adding resilience and increasing yield stability. “Research has shown that drainage water recycling using sub irrigation reduces yield variability some 28 percent compared to free drainage,” Nelson said in the research.
