Researchers release 10 practices to reduce nitrogen loss

April 3, 2017  By Drainage Contractor

To reduce the size of the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone, reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus loads have been proposed across the Mississippi River Basin, to a tune of 45 percent.

A newly funded project led by the University of Illinois is underway to develop a comprehensive package of information about these drainage water quality-improvement practices. First up is the release of a booklet entitled “Ten Ways to Reduce Nitrogen Loads from Drained Cropland in the Midwest,” and you can download it here.
