New drainage systems aim to hold back water, sediment

A new drainage system on the edge of Mapleton is described by one expert as the poster child for how new systems should and will have to be designed and built.
The County Ditch 57 system includes improvements to a farm drainage system that includes both open ditch areas and buried drainage pipes. In the open ditch they installed a new two-stage ditch that reduces the amount of sediment that eventually flows into rivers.
The ditch also has a weir that allows some water to be held back in the ditch system and released more slowly while still draining fields. And there are buffer strips along the ditch. For the full story, click here.
