Farmers in Minnesota have agreed to let scientists measure their soil and nutrient losses in an effort to build conservation practices.
Every day, four large flumes and monitoring stations measure water runoff — primarily for sediment, phosphorus and nitrogen — and another station takes the same measurements at an underground drainage tile. That data helps scientists measure what farm runoff makes its way to nearby creeks and streams so they can assess the impact of new conservation practices designed to cut losses. | READ MORE
