In memory: Soil and water conservation hall-of-famer passes away

Ohio-based farmer, ag advocate and conservation district veteran Lawrence Burdell passed away on March 20, 2024 at the age of 78. According to his obituary, “Lawrence was at home on his beloved century farm when he drew his last breath.”

Described as a “farmer from birth,” Burdell’s motto was that a farmer “to leave the land in a little better condition than when he started.” He was a member of the Gallia Soil and Water Conservation District for 26 years, and held the offices of vice-president, president and past president at the state level. He was inducted into the Soil and Water Conservation District Hall of Fame in 2016, and was named Ohio’s Family Farmer of the Year in 2004.

Outside of farming and his work with conservation districts, Burdell was a teacher of zoology and biology at a secondary school level for 10 years and a Sunday school teacher.

He is predeceased by his wife Judy and survived by his four children, 10 grandchildren and his great grandchildren.
