Recently announced

Recent funding was announced to ensure that youth in Montana have access to education about the health of one of the state’s largest waterways. The Montana Department of Justice’s Natural Resource Damage Program has allocated an additional $1 million in funding to the Montana Tech Institute for Educational Opportunities and the Clark Fork Watershed Education Program. This will allow activities to be extended into the 2023-24 school year.

The Indiana township of Meiks could soon find a solution to his flooding. The township’s local drainage board approved an assessment last week to collect funds to replace the main tile north of the Meiks addition. The costs will be applied to property tax bills for those benefiting from the new drains. The board will assess $20 per acre ($50 minimum, for those who own less than one acre in the area) for the next four years. Estimated total collection will be $35,000 to $40,000 for the 1,200 feet of tile.

Decisions coming soon

In Oceano, Calif., a local drainage improvement project has been well underway since 2017. Although tremendous progress has been made on local flooding, rain in January found that there were still some deficiencies in one key area. The drainage project was meant to reduce inflow to the Meadow Creek Lagoon, but nearby residents still saw flooding. As a result, the county continues to work toward improvements in the area. Work will begin this year to evaluate alternatives for a local restoration project, and a contract for the project will be presented for approval on March 2.

Applications opening soon

The Alberta-based Land Stewardship Centre is aiming to open application for its Watershed Stewardship Grants in early February. Learn about last year’s recipients here.
