Fighting salt with tile lines in the heart of the Red River Valley

Tile lines in the riverbed of Lake Agassiz may help keep salts in water tables from affecting cropland.
That is the thinking of Tom Scherer, NDSU Extension ag engineer, and Aaron Daigh, NDSU Soil Science assistant professor in soil physics.
They presented information at the Big Iron Farm Show field demo site regarding a recent tile drainage study.
The Big Iron demonstration field was tiled in 2011.

In September, a 50-foot long soil pit was dug to expose the tile drainage pipes and areas between the tile lines to compare the effects of tile drainage on the soils.
