Deluges, drainage and despair in Manitoba
October 6, 2014 By Larry Kusch/Winnipeg Free Press
Oct. 6, 2014, Pierson, MB – Manitoba’s farmers blame a succession of heavy rains and unchecked agricultural drainage for the sodden state of farmland on the eastern fringe of the Palliser Triangle.
Larry Kusch of the Winnipeg Free Press reports:
“Increased drainage work to the west has caused water from heavy rains to arrive much quicker and in overwhelming volumes.”
Kusch also notes that Manitobans aren’t the only ones struggling against waves of water from the west:
“As of late August there were 105 requests to the Saskatchewan government for assistance to resolve drainage disputes – most from the southeastern corner of the province near the Manitoba border.”
