California accepting comments on water efficiency

May 20, 2021  By Bree Rody

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is accepting public comment on a draft report outlining recommendations for updates to the State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program (SWEEP). Comments will be accepted between now and June 16, 5 p.m. PDT.

SWEEP was established in 2014 and has resulted in more than 800 projects receiving funding. Its mandate includes enhancements to on-farm irrigation systems using water efficiency technologies. Since October of 2020, CDFA formed an ad hoc advisory group to address key focus areas including considering SWEEP’s ability to help farmers and landowners improve water use efficiency, and how it can improve overall ag operations.

The group will meet virtually to prepare recommendations, which cover diverse themes including streamlining of application, addressing language barriers, improving technical assistance and more.

A draft report has been prepared, in partnership with California State University Sacramento’s Consensus and Collaboration program. The report is available online for interested parties to read prior to the submission of comments.
